The Not Wives by Carley Moore6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() We emailed recently back and forth, her in Maine and me in New York, about writerly obsessions, depression and occasional spots of joy in a pandemic, and making space in art for “the firehose of life.” Read her second novel, Panpocalypse, being released now in serial online format from the Feminist Press. She teaches at NYU and lives with her kid and cat. She’s also hilarious, sexy, and so quick in her leaps of thought and connection that I lose my breath keeping up.Ĭarley Moore is the author of the LAMBDA and Firecracker Award-nominated novel The Not Wives, the essay collection 16 Pills, the poetry chapbook Portal Poem, and the young adult novel The Stalker Chronicles. As a whole, it comprises an unfolding personal and political testament, a reflection of her deep communion with others’ writing, and an endlessly-reiterated conviction that speaking the hard truth is always worth the transformation such an act can bring. Moore’s work is outrageously engaging on so many levels. We’ve shared manuscripts and publishing advice, co-run a reading series, planned and taught together as teachers, and most importantly, cheered each other on. For twenty years now, I’ve read and been read by Carley Moore. ![]()

California edan lepucki review6/29/2023 ![]() His journey suggests an allegory of human development progressing through different stages of life, but readers will probably come up with many other interpretations as well, perhaps seeing in it a nightmare of isolated and introverted consciousness, or the endgame of technologies that have left humanity behind. On its surface it’s a psycho-mystical SF fantasy that describes the adventures of a figure (is he human? a cyborg? an alien or artificial intelligence?) named Crospinal.īecause Crospinal is like a newborn being released into a world he doesn’t understand, the reader has to share much of his confusion as he explores an environment or mental geography painted in the rusting colours of industrial-abstract expressionism. ![]() ![]() Toronto’s Brent Hayward has a knack for creating incredibly lush alternative worlds and mythologies, and Head Full of Mountains may be his most complex and demanding work yet. ![]() The house of mirth pages6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() The novel was serialised in Scribner's Magazine in 1905 and aspects of it now seem old fashioned but its depiction of social mores and their influence gives it universal resonance. ![]() Wharton shows us exactly how women like Lily could be smothered by the upper reaches of society, where individual tragedies are easily subsumed by the current of other people lives. But Lily can neither accept the yoke of conventional behaviour nor shrug it off and she flounders in the space between. Even the way they break society's rules seem to follow the rules. Other characters in the novel operate within the parameters of their class, sex and wealth. ![]() Tragedy, in the classical sense, relates the downfall of a powerful individual that is brought on by his or. Her heroine sinks in stages – failing to snare Percy Gryce or Sim Rosedale as a husband, gambling away large sums of money, being accused of having an affair with a friend's husband, losing her inheritance – until she is reduced to working in a milliner's, her reputation tarnished. Whartons novel is alternately described as a satire of New York Citys wealthy and a tragedy about a physically attractive woman whose beauty causes men to desire to possess her and women to be jealous of her. Wharton is mercilessly frank as she chronicles Lily's fall from grace, contrasting psychological insights with descriptions of external effects. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the illustrated accompanying volume, art historian and comics expert Alexander Braun places Winsor McCay’s life and work within the cultural history of the U.S. TASCHEN’s sumptuous Winsor McCay: The Complete Little Nemo 1905–1927 collects, for the very first time, and in full, glorious color, all 549 episodes of Little Nemo. The books are sometimes shown to have twisted endings. According to Stine, the latter series’ books seem to be more like the books of Goosebumps as they consist of many paranormal adversaries such as vampires, aliens, ghosts, monsters, etc. This too was written keeping in mind the tastes of the younger readers. Part Blade Runner, part District 9 (done right) this is the type of story that will no doubt carve out its own cult status, and change perceptions of what sci fi of today (and tomorrow) can do when it dares to be different. The Ugly Truth: Combining cyberpunk and the cultural richness of a near-future Nigeria is one of the most unexpected things I have ever had the joy of reading. It doesn’t get off to a bumpy or even a slow start, but I did have to invest in it as a reader, but I’m so glad I did as it paid off dividends. The Good: I can’t even attempt to summarise the good in a line or two – all I can say is that Rosewater blew my expectations out of the water in every way possible. ![]() The Fencers by Geza Tatrallyay6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() Geza is a citizen of Canada and Hungary, with an American wife, a daughter living in New York and a son in Nairobi, and currently divides his time between Bordeaux, France, and Barnard, Vermont. ![]() Since 2004, he has essentially been semi-retired, managing a few investments mainly in the clean energy sector and devoting himself to his family and his writing.
